Education Abroad
Expanding horizons through travel study experiences.
The Education Abroad Office, housed within the Palla Center for International Programs, supports the planning and implementation of all credit-bearing programs that take place either outside or within the United States. These programs connect Cumberland University students with immersive learning experiences that strengthen academic, cultural, and professional growth.
Through our strong international partnerships, Cumberland is able to offer some of the most cost-effective and inspiring opportunities for students to explore new cultures, gain international perspectives, and apply their classroom learning in real-world settings.
Travel Study refers to any undergraduate or graduate credit-bearing, off-campus course or program authorized by Cumberland University and led by a faculty or staff member that includes travel, housing, and onsite learning as central academic components.
Programs that meet this definition take place either abroad, offering international academic and cultural experiences, or within the United States, using location-based learning beyond Cumberland’s campus to achieve course objectives.
Short-Term Travel Study: Faculty-led programs lasting one to eight weeks, typically linked to a credit-bearing course designed to enhance the travel experience.
Long-Term Travel Study: Extended educational experiences, such as semester- or year-long study abroad programs, conducted through partner institutions that have formal agreements (MOUs) with Cumberland University.
The Travel Study Committee (TSC) is composed of faculty and staff from across the University who oversee the review and approval of all credit-bearing travel study programs, both abroad and domestic. The committee evaluates proposals to ensure academic quality, logistical feasibility, and alignment with institutional goals.
The committee meets monthly to review new proposals, develop policy recommendations, and strengthen the overall framework for Cumberland’s travel study programming.
